SVA first assignment - try 6

Another poster for my SVA graphic design class. This is my favorite of the posters thus far. Messing with the kerning like this is definitely not something I would do usually, but I thought that maybe breaking up just the simple word would give it more of a sense of rhythm in itself without repetition.

I'm really looking forward to printing this out large and seeing it.

SVA first assignment - try 1

We were tasked with making an 11"x16" poster using the word "rhythm" to explore type/fonts. This is what I made first. I'll probably toss around a few more ideas before next Thursday. (I've already started another one, actually, and I have plans for maybe two more).

All done with the GIMP + some torn out letters/scans (and a lot of patience because my computer kept running out of virtual memory)

(i would suggest looking at it large or full size)

SVA class

SVA class - try1
Originally uploaded by wormulus
So I'm taking this graphic design class at the School of Visual Arts and our first class was today (class is on Thursdays). Our in-class assignment was to use these sheets of Letraset rub-on letters to make a "poster" on the white side of an index card. This was my first try. All the letters used in the sun/clouds/man are letters from my name (L. Nichols).

The second try is here. On the second try, I decided that what I liked most was the little guy with the dandelion, so I tried to do a simplified version of just him using just the letters from my name (L. Nichols). I like how this one came out better, though many in the class preferred the first. What do you think?

It was this crowded or more so all evening! I was glad so many people were there, but it was damn hot. I ended up leaving and coming back later after the sun had set. Had some yummy Thai food across the street from here.

still more experimenting with color. i'm super duper happy with how this came out. the color is marker for the most part, but then I added a bit of digital color on a transparent layer with the marker color as a layer set to multiply. I tried to get the city glow this way. the obama face is the most obviously photoshopped part. i think i'm finally getting the hang of how digital color can enhance analog stuff without making it look too digital.

I think it came out pretty well. i definitely learned a lot from doing it. note to self: next time just use the bristol board instead of the typing paper; it won't wrinkle so much.

I still have like 20+ pages to go. certainly i can get 3-4 done per week... especially since my wife spends 2 days out of the week in the hamptons tutoring rich people's kids.

A drawing for Illustration Friday last week. The word was "enough." This is what popped into my head, so I drew it.

color experiment (pages 1&2)

pages 3&4 can be found here

playing around with markers and colors in my moleskine. colors scanned a little weird (i.e. the pink/magenta is not as bright as it is in real life.)

I figured I deserved to play/experiment a bit since I finished the inside of the next issue of "jumbly junkery" a month and a half early! I'll send those to the printer in the next week or so and then gocco the covers in august. i can hardly wait!

I always wonder what these men are thinking when they say such things. What makes them? These are just the more memorable quotes from the guys in my neighborhood over the past year. I wish I could say I made them up, but I didn't. Luckily(?) my life seems to write itself.

If you look at the bottom panel on the first page, you can see water damage from my sketchbook soaking up rain from this past saturday when I marched in the dyke march from 42nd st to 14th st. At 14th st, it finally stopped raining enough that I could check my sketchbook in my backpack and see how it was. I was horrified and miserable and nearly went into a total panic. Luckily I think i've salvaged it all pretty well.

for an explanation: obama is winning the south and hillary is winning the north as far as which states they've won. i'm not really sure what dylan plans on writing about on 365observations, but this is what he asked for -- obama and clinton in a standoff with rifles. obama in a confederate uniform and clinton in a union one.

i'm really happy with how the image itself came out, regardless of what it's supposed to be about. I used one of those pigma graphic 1mm pens to draw it instead of my usual brush/ink or rapidographs. I like the chunkiness of the lines and the washed out colors i used. i think i might try some future illustrations with this same method in the future. especially since i can carry this pen with me easier than i can brush/ink.
